Bonsai Soil

Bonsai Soil

The right soil is important in order to supply trees with nutrients. The soil will retain water, drain properly, and provide aeration to help your tree thrive.

Key notes: Soil

  • Good aeration
  • Well draining
  • Water-retention

Soil Components:

Bonsai soil can contain Akadama, Pumice, and Lava Rock.

Akadama: is a clay-like mineral which is naturally occurring and brownish in color. It has very good water retention and aeration properties which are very important for the root development in Bonsai trees.

Lava Rock: Is a volcanic rock used in Bonsai soil. It improves the drainage and has great water retention.

Pumice: Is a soft volcanic rock that helps retain water and allows the roots to ramify very well. It can absorb water and nutrients very well. Roots cannot grow into the Lava rock.

Soil Mixture:

Deciduous Bonsai Soil: 50% Akadama, 25% Pumice, 25% Lava rock

Coniferous Soil: 33% Akadama, 33% Pumice, 33% Lava rock

**If a tree stays too wet, you can use less Akadama and if a tree needs to retain more water add more Akadama to the mixture.
